Directory Services
Published by darrell December 2nd, 2005 in WorkI’m a huge fan of directory services, and I’ve spent the better part of the last three years at work conentrating on designing and delivering systems to support directory services. For the most part, I did all of this using OpenLDAP, with a PHP-based front-end to abstract the administration of the directory. Over the last several months, however, I’ve been working with Phillip to develop a real Secure Identity Management solution based on Novell’s eDirectory and Identity Manager. These products make it possible to integrate disparate platforms and applications so that you can manage your users (or “identities”) from a single application, and let the software talk to all of your applications/systems to keep all account information synchronized.
If you’re into IT systems, this is pretty cool stuff. If you’re not, then everything in the previous paragraph probably zipped right past your head. Not to worry, knowing this stuff isn’t exactly going to earn me any “cool” points, but I’ve been thinking about how long I’ve been working on this sort of thing since I could be leaving in a few months, and I’ll likely never do any IT work again (at least not if I can help it).
I think having a CRISP (LOLZ/ROFFLCOPTER/LOLCANO) directory services implementation will be cool! The customer facing one will also be the bomb.
