My Strengths - The Series

My StrengthsEpisode 4 - Consistentcy

Official Description: - “People strong in the Consistency theme are keenly aware of the need to treat people the same. They try to treat everyone in the world with consistency by setting up clear rules and adhering to them.”

I used to think that by “consistency”, it was meant that I’m dependable, reliable…you know…consistent. Well, it turns out that this strength used to be named fairness, but the name was changed for some reason. I think “fairness” describes this strength better than “consistency”, but whatever. Of course, I am dependable, reliable, and consistent, but that’s apparently not directly related to this particular strength. I actually think that those traits are covered by my Context strength, although it may be one of those implied things.

Anyway, that’s not to say that this strength is incorrect. I do strive to treat people equally. This does not just mean that I treat people equally regardless of race, nationality, or religion (all true, of course), but I also treat people equally regardless of their position in the company, their job title, or their salary. In other words, I want everything to be fair. Of course, life isn’t fair, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t strive to make my environment as fair as possible.

I also believe in the idea that “the rules” should be applied uniformly to everyone. Not only should nobody get preferential treatment, but neither should anyone be left out. Being in the IT department, this is a little difficult to get across at times, because some people continually believe that this department is somehow “better” than other departments (which I must reject immediately thanks to this strength), and that somehow the “standard rules” do not necessarily apply to us (which I also reject). In other words, when we implement password aging and everyone has to change their password every quarter, rest assured that the IT guys and gals will have to change theirs as well, at least if I have anything to say about it.
